In all our activities we are delighted by the high degree of interest shown by newcomers to the area.  This fact, among others, encouraged the society to produce hard copy leaflets covering various aspects of local history … hence the birth of ‘The Garth Domain’ in December 1998.  From the beginning, the editor, Don Llewellyn, has taken full responsibility for the content of the publication.  He chose the title in recognition of the fact that the mountain which has been in the ownership of the Pentyrch Council since 1972, was central to all aspects of the history of our ancient parish.  We followed the precedent set by our colleague, J Barry Davies with his highly successful Llantrisant History Society Newsletters – although we settled for more of a ‘tabloid’ style. We planned initially to restrict the issues to our members only, with the content being of exclusive interest to the villages of the old Parish, i.e. Pentyrch, Creigiau and Gwaelodygarth.  However, demand for the leaflet quickly grew and it soon became clear that future issues would contain more pages and that the readership was quickly spreading to neighbouring villages.

After the first dozen or so editions it became obvious that the relationship between our own community and others  in the environs of the Garth was very close; indeed we have a shared history.  We are pleased that due space was then given to regular stories from Taff’s Well (where you will find the best view of the Garth without a doubt!)  There have also been items relating to Nantgarw, Tongwynlais, Morganstown, Church Village and Efail Isaf.   Capel Llanilltern too was fully covered in one issue.   We are grateful to Cardiff University Graphic Services for the high standard they have maintained in the printing of our booklets.  They continue to help with the printing of back-issues when required.  The series ceased to become a regular publication in June 2013 but we are confident that the leaflets constitute a huge repository of information about past life in our area (that is why back-numbers remain very much in demand).  Who knows, the series might be revived in the future.

Below is a list of all the editions from 1-60. Please see the detailed contents page for more information. One copy would be  £2 plus £1.50 postage and packing.  The cost of multiple copies may be obtained by contacting the society.  All payments to be made to Pentyrch Local History Society. All enquiries may be addressed to pentyrchistory@gmail.com
